Asthma Care in Winter: Why Adherence to Inhalers Matters More Than Ever?

Cold air prompts the release of histamine, a chemical your body produces during an allergic reaction, which causes wheezing

Asthma Care in Winter: If you have asthma, the winter months can be extremely challenging, as cold air is a powerful trigger. Not only does it dry and irritate the airways, often worsening asthma symptoms, but cold air also causes bronchospasms—when airways constrict and tighten—making it extremely difficult to breathe.
Moreover, cold air prompts the release of histamine, a chemical your body produces during an allergic reaction, which causes symptoms like wheezing. Combined with weakened immunity, asthma makes it harder to fight off infections, increasing the likelihood of airway inflammation. Together, these factors demand extra vigilance in managing asthma, with experts suggesting that inhalation therapy plays an important role in keeping the condition under check.

Why is adhering to inhalation therapy important?

Inhalation therapy is the cornerstone of asthma treatment. “By delivering medication directly to the lungs, inhalers provide targeted relief while minimising the risk of side effects,” Dr. Kanmani M. K., Chest Physician, told Times Now.
According to Dr. Kanmani, inhalation therapy is crucial as it can help:

Reduce inflammation

Your doctor will prescribe a preventative or controller inhaler containing inhaled corticosteroids if you have asthma. “It is crucial to use this medication regularly, exactly as prescribed by your doctor, to reduce airway inflammation, manage chronic symptoms, and prevent asthma attacks. This inhaler is one of the most essential treatments for managing asthma effectively,” said Dr. Kanmani.
Skipping this part of your treatment, especially during winter when asthma triggers are more common, increases the risk of life-threatening exacerbations.

Provides quick relief

Inhalers work like rescue medications, providing instant relief during a sudden asthma attack. According to experts, inhalers serve as the first line of defence against cold weather-induced symptoms and should be used immediately to relax and open the airways. “Making the regular use of controller inhalers is particularly important to prevent exacerbations and reduce the need for emergency treatments,” Dr. Kanmani added.

Tips for improving inhaler adherence

The first step is to ensure that you use the inhaler correctly and so your healthcare provider can be asked to demonstrate the correct technique for your specific inhaler. “Different devices require different methods of use. Asking your doctor for a hands-on demonstration can also help ensure you're getting the full dose of medication,” said Dr. Kanmani.
  • Make sure to store your inhalers in a warm place, especially in winter, and avoid leaving them in your car or other places where temperatures fluctuate.
  • Developing a routine is another effective strategy and so incorporate your inhaler into your daily routine, as prescribed, to make it easier to remember.
  • Make sure to create an asthma action plan with your doctor that will help you manage asthma day-to-day, how to respond if symptoms worsen, and when to seek urgent care.
  • Stay in touch with your doctor throughout the season, discussing any challenges with adherence or changes in symptoms.
  • By understanding the specific challenges winter poses for asthma management and prioritising treatment adherence, individuals with asthma can navigate the colder months more comfortably and minimise the risk of serious complications.
