A Matter of Grave Concern: PM Modi Shares Hands-on Tips To Reduce Increasing Obesity Among Youth

Modi suggested everyone should focus on eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing concern over increasing obesity rates, especially among the youth, shared easy ways to get over this “growing epidemic.". Speaking recently at the inauguration of the 38th National Games in Dehradun, Modi said it is important to tackle obesity as it is the root cause of most deadly diseases. “Obesity increases the risk of diseases like diabetes and heart disease,” he said. “Statistics say that the problem of obesity is increasing rapidly in our country. Every age group of the country, and even the youth, are being badly affected by it,” the Prime Minister added.
Sharing ways to reduce the burden of weight, Modi suggested everyone should focus on eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly. “Every day, take some time and do exercise. From walking to working out, do whatever is possible. Secondly, focus on your diet. Your focus should be on balanced intake and the food should be nutritious," he said.
Modi’s tips on controlling weight and preventing obesity included:

Eat nutritious diet

The Prime Minister urged everyone to take care of their diet by eating healthy and nutritious food and cutting down on consumption of oil by at least 10 per cent.
"Reduce unhealthy fat and oil in your food. Now in our normal homes, the ration comes at the beginning of the month. Till now, if you used to bring home two liters of cooking oil every month, then reduce it by at least 10 percent. Reduce the amount of oil we use every day by 10 percent,” he said while addressing the gathering.
According to experts, excessive intake of oils with saturated and trans fat not only leads to weight gain but also increases cholesterol and blood pressure levels, both of which are dangerous. Healthy oils, like olive, avocado, and flaxseed oil, are rich in unsaturated fats and antioxidants, promoting heart health, reducing inflammation, and improving brain function.
Apart from that, it is also important to include seasonal fruits and vegetables in your daily intake is five to nine servings per day for adults. Filling your plate with veggies and fruit can help keep calories reasonable and reduce the risk of overeating.

Get quality sleep

Modi spoke about the importance of healthy and uninterrupted sleep, which he said was important to reduce obesity. When you do not get quality sleep, the regulatory balance of hormones gets disrupted – increasing the urge for highly calorie-rich food items which leads to weight gain and obesity.
Poor sleep also affects metabolic and insulin activities, thereby leading to obesity risk.

Get fresh air and sunlight

According to the Prime Minister, it is extremely important to get exposure to the natural environment with fresh air and sunlight every day which improves serotonin levels in the body.
High serotonin levels help control hunger and mood disorders—helping in weight control indirectly. Sunlight also promotes the production of vitamin D, which affects fat storage and metabolism, providing additional benefits in preventing obesity.
