Toothaches are no less than nightmares for many of us. It’s so painful that it can even cause headaches. The worst part is, it can happen at any time, and the discomfort can range from mild to severe. Toothaches can happen due to various reasons ranging from tooth decay to gum diseases. While it's always advisable to consult a dentist for persistent pain, several home remedies can provide temporary relief until you get to see a dentist.

- Saltwater Rinse

One of the most common remedies for toothache is a saltwater rinse. This natural disinfectant can help reduce inflammation, soothe sore gums, and dislodge any food particles stuck between teeth. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), saltwater acts as an isotonic solution that can reduce bacteria in the mouth and promote the healing of oral tissues.
How to use:
Mix 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and use it as a mouthwash. Swish the solution in your mouth for 30 seconds before spitting it out. Repeat a few times a day.

- Clove Oil

Clove oil has been used for centuries as a remedy for toothache. Its primary active compound, eugenol, is a natural anaesthetic and anti-inflammatory agent that can help numb the pain and reduce swelling. A study published in the Journal of Dentistry found that clove oil can be just as effective as benzocaine (a topical numbing agent) in relieving pain caused by toothaches.
How to use:
Dip a cotton ball in clove oil and apply it directly to the affected area. You can also dilute the clove oil with a carrier oil, like olive oil if you find it too strong. Be cautious not to swallow the oil.

- Cold Compress

A cold compress can be an effective way to numb the pain and reduce swelling associated with toothaches. The cold constricts blood vessels, which helps slow blood flow to the affected area, thus reducing inflammation. According to the American Association of Endodontists, applying a cold compress to the outside of the cheek near the painful tooth can provide temporary relief.
How to use:
Wrap a few ice cubes in a cloth and hold it against your cheek for 15-20 minutes. Repeat as needed, but make sure to wait at least 20 minutes between applications to avoid skin damage.

- Garlic

Garlic has potent antibacterial properties due to its high concentration of allicin, which can help combat the bacteria that cause tooth infections. Research published in Phytotherapy Research has highlighted garlic’s role as an effective natural antimicrobial agent. It can help reduce tooth pain by killing harmful bacteria in the affected area.
How to use:
Crush a clove of garlic to release its allicin and apply it directly to the painful area. Alternatively, you can chew a clove of garlic slowly on the side of the mouth with the toothache.

- Peppermint Tea Bags

Peppermint contains menthol, which has numbing and soothing properties that can help alleviate toothache pain. A study in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology revealed that peppermint is an effective natural remedy for pain relief due to its cooling and calming effects.
How to use:
Steep a peppermint tea bag in hot water for a few minutes, then let it cool. Apply the cooled tea bag directly to the painful area for temporary relief.
