A new milestone has been achieved by doctors as they successfully restored the vision of a premature baby who underwent bilateral cataract surgery at Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital in Bengaluru. The complex procedure was performed on a 31-week-old infant by Dr Sri Ganesh, a renowned ophthalmologist and Chairman of Nethradhama. The baby boy, born prematurely at just 31 weeks and weighing 1.05 kg, was diagnosed with bilateral mature congenital cataracts, a rare condition that severely impairs vision due to clouding of the eye lens. Comprehensive screening and diagnostic tests, including TORCH titer tests and B-scan imaging, were conducted to confirm the diagnosis and rule out complications like Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), a common issue in premature infants.
After thorough consultation, the infant underwent bilateral micro-incision cataract surgery. This involved advanced procedures such as anterior vitrectomy (removing the gel from the eye's front), posterior capsulorhexis (creating an opening in the lens), and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation (placing an artificial lens). The surgery was conducted at Nethradhama’s Jayanagar Centre of Excellence, ensuring precision and safety.
Despite the high risks associated with the baby’s premature status and low birth weight, the surgical team, led by Dr Ganesh, achieved a successful outcome. A dedicated team of anesthesiologists, led by Dr Suman Shree R, provided specialized care to ensure the baby’s safety during the procedure. Advanced micro-incision techniques and foldable lenses were used to enhance recovery and minimize complications.
Expressing his joy over the successful surgery, Dr Sri Ganesh said, “Restoring the vision of such a young patient is both challenging and rewarding. Our hospital’s cutting-edge pediatric eye care solutions and state-of-the-art technology allow us to achieve superior outcomes even in the most complex cases. We remain committed to providing exceptional care and innovation to transform lives.”
The baby’s parents were overwhelmed with gratitude for the life-changing surgery. The infant’s mother shared her thoughts, saying, “Our deepest gratitude goes to Dr. Sri Ganesh and the team at Nethradhama. Their support and expertise gave us hope and courage during this difficult time. They have truly given our child the gift of sight, and we couldn’t be more thankful.”
This case highlights the importance of early diagnosis and timely intervention for treating congenital cataracts and other ocular abnormalities in infants. Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital has consistently set benchmarks in advanced pediatric eye care, offering solutions for rare and challenging conditions.
