Shreya says she began her journey of workouts after a pause due to slip disc, taking help from her doctors

Winning hearts for her flawless performance for Bandish Bandits was not enough for Shreya Choudhry. She is now also an inspiration for those with back issues—specifically, slip disc—a painful condition, as she reveals losing 30 kg after the unfortunate condition she faced at the age of 19.
Shreya later gained more than 30 kilos, as she could not move or exercise properly, facing a lot of challenges along the way. However, this determined actor did not give up and overcame all hurdles, making her weight loss journey both inspiring and relatable.
Shreya recently shared on social media how she overcame significant fitness challenges that could have hindered her pursuit of an acting career. In the post, Shreya opened up about the struggles that threw her fitness journey off track and the reasons behind it.
“When I was 19, I was going through a lot. I was not in the best headspace. During this time, I put on a lot of weight; this took a toll on my fitness and health. I stopped doing any physical activity and this made things worse,” she wrote on Instagram. “I remember one day while lying on my bed, I told myself that I had to take care of myself. I had to be happy and healthy for myself, my family, and for my ambitions and aspirations,” she added.

Began fitness journey while taking care of the back

That is when Shreya says she began her journey of workouts again, taking help from her doctors to not get injured again.
“It took me many, many months, but I focused on my fitness and well-being, and by the time I was 21, my body and mind were in a brand-new mode. I slowly became fitter, lost 30 kilos, and there was no relapse of the slipped disc, which meant I could be carefree and focus on becoming even fitter,” she added.

What is a slip disc?

Also known as a herniated disc, the condition happens when one of your spinal discs protrudes, causing immense pain and numbness and, if severe enough, may require surgery.
Your spinal column is made up of a series of bones that are stacked onto each other. From top to bottom, the column includes seven bones in the cervical spine, 12 in the thoracic spine, and five in the lumbar spine, followed by the sacrum and coccyx at the base. The discs protect the bones by absorbing the shocks from daily activities like walking, lifting, and twisting. Either injury or weakness can cause the inner portion of the disc to protrude through the outer ring, known as a slipped disc.

What are the safe exercises for herniated or slipped discs?

According to experts, gentle workouts, stretches, and activities can all help relieve the pain of a herniated disc. Neck, back, and hamstring stretches may improve flexibility and prevent a herniated disc from recurring.
You can also try hamstring exercises, in which you can stretch the hamstring muscles that help alleviate tension in the lower back and legs. Also, try neck stretches to help mitigate neck pain. Pressure on the nerves in the neck can cause pain in the neck and shoulder muscles.
According to experts, doing gentle activities and exercises strengthens the muscles that support the spine and reduces pressure on the spinal column. They also help promote flexibility and may help reduce the risk of a herniated disc recurring. Other gentle activities that can help with a herniated disc include:

  • Swimming
  • Walking
  • Cycling
