Dyspareunia means pain in the genital area or pelvis during sexual intercourse. Moreover, this pain can be sharp or intense and discomforting. Women with dyspareunia may struggle with depression and low self-esteem too. Women with this condition will often avoid discussions regarding this topic due to the stigma attached to it. Those with this condition will often be embarrassed, frustrated, lonely agitated, and ashamed.
The causes of pain during sexual activity can be attributed to a wide range of factors such as vaginal dryness that happens due to menopause, pregnancy, breastfeeding and certain medications, skin problems, yeast and urinary tract infections, trauma, accident, childbirth, hysterectomy, vulvodynia, vaginitis, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, vaginismus, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and pelvic floor dysfunction. This condition is seen in approximately 4 out of every 7 women.
