Many people turn to various diets and lifestyle changes in pursuit of weight loss. However, the impact of these dietary choices on longevity is not always clear. A recent study led by Gary Churchill from The Jackson Laboratory has shed light on how different diets, including calorie restriction and intermittent fasting, can positively influence lifespan.
The research, conducted on 937 genetically diverse female mice, divided the subjects into five groups based on their dietary intake. One group had unrestricted access to food, while two groups followed calorie-restricted diets, and two others practised intermittent fasting. The researchers then monitored the mice's health through regular assessments and blood tests throughout their lives to evaluate the effects of these diets on longevity.
Study Findings:
The results of the study revealed that both calorie restriction and intermittent fasting improved the lifespan of the mice compared to those with unrestricted access to food. The mice that practised intermittent fasting, either for one or two days per week, experienced noticeable lifespan extensions. Notably, the mice that fasted for two days lived longer than those that fasted for just one day. Interestingly, even when the fasting mice consumed the same total amount of food as their unrestricted counterparts, their lifespans were still extended.
According to Gary Churchill, the Karl Gunnar Johansson Chair and professor at JAX who led the study, a moderate level of calorie restriction and intermittent fasting can significantly enhance health and lifespan. The findings suggest that adopting these dietary habits may have substantial long-term benefits, particularly in improving overall longevity.
Rethinking Longevity and Diet:
The study also challenges traditional beliefs, showing that calorie restriction can mitigate the negative effects of obesity and boost longevity. However, Churchill and his team found that the mechanisms behind this effect are more complex than previously thought, indicating that several factors contribute to the improved lifespan associated with calorie restriction.
Downsides of Dietary Restrictions:
Despite the benefits, the study also highlighted some downsides of extreme dietary restrictions. The mice that lived the longest showed a significant loss of lean body mass, which affected their immunity and made them more vulnerable to infections. This suggests that while calorie restriction and intermittent fasting can enhance longevity, extreme dietary changes may have some negative health consequences.
This research shows the importance of balance when it comes to adopting dietary restrictions for weight loss or longevity. Moderate approaches may offer the best health benefits without compromising overall well-being.
