7 Ayurvedic Remedies To Keep Respiratory Health In Check
Ayurveda, a holistic health system, recommends simple daily procedures as part of "Dincharya" (daily routine) to strengthen the respiratory system and ease breathing in polluted environments.
1. Gandusha (Oil Gargling)
Gargling with sesame oil or warm water after brushing your teeth can act as a filter for pollutants. This practice prevents dental issues and reduces the chances of harmful particles entering the body.
2. Nasya (Nasal Oil Application)
Applying 2 drops of warm ghee or oil (such as sesame oil) in each nostril at bedtime conditions the nasal mucosa, preventing dust and pollutants from entering the respiratory tract.
- Additional Tip: Before stepping outside, apply a small amount of ghee or oil in the nostrils using your fingertip for added protection.
- Benefits: Nasya improves the health of the eyes, nose, and ears, reducing the risk of related disorders.
3. Dhoomapan (Herbal Smoke Inhalation)
Herbal smoke created by burning a mixture of ghee or wax and specific herbs like guggulu, agaru, jatamansi, tamalpatra, and nagarmotha can be inhaled through the nose and exhaled through the mouth. This practice is particularly effective in alleviating:
- Headaches
- Cough
- Cold
- Asthma
- ENT-related issues
Inhaling these herbal fumes in the early morning provides significant respiratory benefits.
4. Siddha Jal (Herbal Warm Water)
Drinking warm water infused with herbs such as shatavari, amla, honey, or rock candy can help combat cold, cough, and pollution-related issues. This simple habit improves digestion and strengthens immunity.
5. Hansodak (Copper-Infused Water)
Water infused with sunlight, moonlight, and the Agasti star (stored in copper vessels) is highly beneficial. This water can be used for drinking, bathing, and even swimming, particularly during the Sharad Ritu (autumn season).
6. Balanced Diet
Consuming light, healthy foods made from wheat, barley, and rice helps maintain digestion in the autumn season. Opt for sweet, pungent, and easily digestible meals to strengthen immunity.
7. Use of Seasonal Flowers
Decorate your living spaces with autumn flowers like roses, lilies, lotus, marigolds, and parijat (night-blooming jasmine). These flowers act as natural air purifiers, improving indoor air quality.
