There’s always a ‘right time’ for everything. From having meals at the right time to going out for a walk. But did you know that there’s a right time to check your weight too? Some of us are usually anxious about what comes on the weighing scale, and we constantly keep checking our weight throughout our day. Which is not the right way. When it comes to monitoring weight effectively, timing is everything. So what is the right time to check your kgs?
Right Time To Check Your Weight
According to Dr Imran Shaikh, Consultant GI and Oncosurgeon at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central, the ideal time to weigh yourself is in the morning, right after your first bowel movement and before eating or drinking. This specific timing allows for the most accurate reading by removing the fluctuations in weight caused by food, fluids, and other daily factors.
Keeping this daily ritual consistent—same time, same conditions—ensures that your readings are reliable, especially if you’re monitoring weight changes due to lifestyle adjustments, such as diet or exercise. However, there are times when our gut health is not clear and we experience digestive issues.
Our poor eating habits and sedentary lifestyles are the reasons why many of us struggle with digestive issues such as bloating, constipation, and indigestion.
Hence to maintain a healthy gut, Dr Shaikh suggests starting your day with hydration. Drinking plenty of water not only supports digestion but also helps keep bowel movements regular. Fibre-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are essential for adding bulk to stools, ensuring regularity. Foods containing probiotics, like yogurt and kefir, help balance gut bacteria, reducing bloating and supporting digestion.
Simple Tips to Improve Digestion
Good digestion can help in getting accurate results when it comes to checking weight.
Chew Properly
Dr Shaikh explains the importance of chewing food thoroughly. Proper chewing activates enzymes that begin the breakdown of food, easing the burden on the stomach and ensuring that nutrients are better absorbed.
Eat Small And Frequent Meals
Eating smaller, more frequent meals with a balanced ratio of nutrients is also important, as large meals can overwhelm the digestive system.
Limit Processed Foods
Limiting processed foods is crucial for digestive health. Highly processed foods, often high in fat and sugar, can be difficult to digest and may contribute to bloating and discomfort. Instead, focus on whole, natural foods that are nutrient-dense and easier for your body to process.
Stay Active
Staying physically active can also support gut health. Light exercises, such as walking after meals, can stimulate digestion and prevent constipation.
Manage Stress
Managing stress is another crucial aspect of maintaining a healthy digestive system, as stress can cause or lead to digestive issues like bloating and indigestion. Dr Shaikh recommends incorporating stress-reducing practices, such as meditation or deep breathing exercises, into your daily routine to support overall gut health.
What To Do To Clear Your Gut?According to Heema Nanavati, BAMS, Consultant at AAYU Clinic in Kandivali, Mumbai, explains ayurvedic detox methods, especially Panchkarma, are aimed at cleansing not just the gut but the entire body. Panchkarma involves five key therapeutic procedures that aim to eliminate toxins from deep within the body. These procedures include:
- Vaman: Therapeutic vomiting to eliminate toxins from the upper digestive tract.
- Virechan: Therapeutic purgation for the removal of toxins from the body.
- Basti: Enemas used to cleanse the lower digestive system.
- Nasya: Removal of toxins from the head, neck, and brain through nasal administration.
- Raktamokshan: The removal of toxins circulating in the blood.
Heema explains that deep cleansing through Panchkarma is beneficial for everyone, whether they are healthy or dealing with illness. However, for those dealing with specific health conditions, certain procedures may be selected according to their individual needs.
Dr Sushama Sumeet, BAMS, MD, PhD, Ayurveda Physician, explains the importance of gut microbiota in regulating metabolic functions, immunity, and colonic health. In Ayurveda, certain lifestyle habits can disrupt gut health. Overeating, irregular eating patterns, and the consumption of unhealthy foods are all identified as factors that disturb the digestive system and lead to imbalances in gut bacteria.
Irregular eating habits, such as eating when previous meals have not been digested or ignoring natural urges like defecation, can weaken the digestive power, leading to issues like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Dr Sumeet explains that such disruptions increase the risk of gastrointestinal cancers, including colorectal cancer, small bowel cancer, intestinal lymphoma, and cholangiocarcinoma.
