Actor Bhagyashree is known for her healthy lifestyle choices. She often shares healthy tips and recipes with her online followers. In a recent video that she shared on Instagram, the actress shared her favourite protein dip which is a healthy hummus recipe.
She wrote, “A protein snack that can be had by itself, can replace butter in sandwiches or rolls. Can be had as a dip and is super healthy, serving you energy with taste. Make some and preserve in your fridge for a couple of days. P.s. Important points to note while making a creamy hummus is to remove the skin from the chole and secondly add ice while blending at the end.”
Here, take a look at the recipe.
  • Start by boiling the chickpeas and then removing their skin.
  • Then, grind the chickpeas in a blender with a tablespoon of olive oil.
  • Follow this by adding in 2 spoonfuls of curd and blending the mix again.
  • In another container, blend 2-3 teaspoons of roasted sesame seeds along with garlic and salt as per your taste.
  • Then mix the tahini with the chickpea mix and then transfer it to a grinder.
  • To this, add juice from half a lemon and 6-8 ice cubes for a smooth texture. Blend this properly.
Bhagyashree says that you can also use this hummus dip as an alternative for butter in your sandwiches.

Health Benefits Of Hummus

Plant-Based Protein

Hummus is made primarily from chickpeas and is an excellent source of plant-based protein. It helps in muscle repair, growth and overall cellular health, thereby, making it good for vegetarians and vegans.

Source of Fibre

Chickpeas in hummus give you soluble and insoluble fibre which helps in digestion and supports a healthy gut. Fibre also helps in regular bowel movements, helps manage weight and can lower cholesterol levels.

Heart Health

Hummus has ingredients like olive oil and chickpeas which contain heart-healthy fats, especially monounsaturated fats. This can help to reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) and lower blood pressure. This combination also helps decrease the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Olive oil is a primary ingredient in hummus which is rich in antioxidants like oleocanthal which have anti-inflammatory effects. Regular consumption of hummus can help reduce inflammation, thereby, improving joint health and reducing the risk of chronic disease.

Blood Sugar Levels

The combination of protein, fibre and healthy fats in hummus slows down carbohydrate absorption, thereby, preventing spikes in blood sugar levels. This makes hummus a good food choice for people who are trying to manage diabetes or insulin sensitivity.

Packed with Essential Nutrients

Hummus has important nutrients like folate, iron, B vitamins, magnesium and zinc which help in energy production, immune function and formation of red blood cells.

Weight Management

Its high fibre and protein content helps to improving satiety, thereby, reducing overall calorie intake. Hummus also has a low glycemic index which helps to control hunger and maintain a healthy weight over time.
