According to the preliminary autopsy report details Liam Payne passed away due to polytrauma and internal and external bleeding
The preliminary autopsy report of Liam Payne has confirmed that the cause of his death was polytrauma, along with internal and external injuries that caused hemorrhages, a day after the singer passed away at the age of 31.
Earlier this week, the former One Direction member died after falling from the third floor of a hotel balcony in Argentina. The autopsy report, according to the Argentina National Prosecutor’s Office, gives details of how Payne sheds light on the injuries he sustained before his passing.
How did Liam die?
According to a statement by the Sistema de Atencio Medica de Emergencia, after Payne’s death, “British musician Liam James Payne, composer, and guitarist, former member of the band One Direction, died today after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Palermo,” the statement read. “In the afternoon, police personnel from Precinct 14B were directed to the hotel by a 911 call reporting an aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”
The call, according to the reports, happened just before Payne fell off the balcony, according to the prosecutor’s office. The report, however, did not name Payne. He “had jumped from the balcony of his room,” a statement from the Security Ministry of Buenos Aires, told the Associated Press, adding that he had “extremely serious injuries” and was declared dead on the scene.
What did Payne's autopsy report show?
According to the preliminary autopsy report details – obtained by various media outlets - Payne passed away due to polytrauma and internal and external bleeding. The prosecutor’s office also called his death “doubtful/undetermined” - which means there was no conclusive information about the cause of death.
Media reports say following his passing, “a series of substances were seized from the musician’s room, which would prove a previous situation of alcohol and drugs consumption,” the release from the prosecutor's office said.
Payne had a history of addiction prior to his death.
Apart from multiple traumatic injuries, he also sustained severe internal and external bleeding, due to the fall, the release from the prosecutor’s office said. Forensic experts also found a total of 25 injuries which they said were compatible with those produced by a fall from height. Also, his brain and skull injuries – also known as cranioencephalic injuries - in particular were sufficiently suitable to cause death.
The release added that the internal and external hemorrhages in his skull, chest, abdomen, and limbs led to his ultimate death.
And since there were no defensive injuries in his body, forensics say they believe that all the injuries on his body were vital and produced at the same time – which means there was no intervention from a third party. Additionally, the position of Payne’s body suggested that he “did not adopt a reflexive posture to protect himself and that he could have fallen in a state of semi or total unconsciousness”, the report added.
