When it comes to weight loss, new and trendy diets become hugely popular, especially among youngsters. From keto and intermittent fasting to paleo, the list is endless. However, the latest buzzword is an anti-inflammatory die with actors like Vidya Balan and Samantha Ruth Prabu going ga-ga about it.
Celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar recently took to social media to share some important insights about this eating schedule, which emphasises consuming fresh, unprocessed foods that are high in fibre, healthy fats, and nutrients to lower inflammation. But does it work for weight loss?
“Every five years the health industry comes up with a new diet, which everyone thinks is the cure to all their problems. Currently, it is an anti-inflammatory diet. Everyone is convinced that their body has too much inflammation. So first you need to know what inflammation is,” she said on Instagram.

What is inflammation?

According to experts, inflammation is a natural response of the body to injury or infection. It is an important part of your immune system that helps the body heal and fight off infection. “Inflammation is normal for the body and it is the process that allows your body to heal,” she said.
However, Rujuta said there’s no one diet or food that can reduce it. “It’s your entire lifestyle that removes it,” she said. “And that also just keeps it in control when needed,” Rujuta added.

What should you do to reduce inflammation in your body?

According to Rujuta, a few steps you can take to keep inflammation under control include:

Eat homecooked food

Rujuta insists you must eat foods that are fresh and prepared at home. “It includes foods that have a name in your native language as they can resonate with your body,” she said. “Eat the foods at the right time, without being in front of television or mobile screens.”

Regular exercise

Exercise is important and critical for ensuring a regulated response. Too much or too little exercise can lead to chronic inflammation in the long run. “Do the kind of exercise that can help you recover,” she said.

Sleep

“Late nights are harmful for your body.” Sleep is the most underrated aspect of the recovery and ageing process. And so, it is important to maintain good sleep hygiene. “Prioritise sleep, which will keep you happy and calm,” said Rujuta.

Keep your stress levels down

According to studies, stress triggers your body's inflammatory response, which leads to long-term health consequences, including inflammation. Experts say when stressed, your body releases more cortisol and adrenaline, which can increase heart rate. “What people are doing around you and following which diet should not be your problem.” She advises not to keep falling prey to every new fad in town.

What are the signs and symptoms of inflammation?

Chronic inflammation symptoms may be harder to spot than acute inflammation symptoms. You may have:
  • Belly or abdominal pain
  • Chest pain
  • Extreme fatigue and insomnia
  • Fever
  • Joint pain and stiffness
  • Mouth sores
  • Depression, anxiety, and mood disorders
  • Gastrointestinal issues like recurrent diarrhoea and constipation
  • Weight gain or weight loss
